MAPMC Team Members!
” Growing up on a family dairy farm in southern Idaho entailed much hard work, unlike the Napoleon Dynamite extravaganza filmed in my hometown. Our farm silos and sprinkled green fields are the final tetherball scene background. Fortunate to spend many hours aside my father, he shared life’s experiences and proper motivations. These raised me up well. Receiving a scholarship to attend Brigham Young University, I completed an honors thesis and cancer research fellowship under Dr. Greg Burton. Mentoring by him, provided a base for critical thinking and many good times fly-fishing at West Yellowstone.
After graduation, working as an environmental microbiologist and section chief at the Utah Department of Health provided well for my little family. Newly married, I persuaded my wife to finish her Linguistics degree after having our first daughter. At my brother’s request, medical student at that time, I began my next stage of professional development by working weekend nights at an community hospital emergency room. There, I had many exciting experiences and positive interactions with patients and staff. Altogether, encouraging me to pursue a career in medicine.
At Medical College of Wisconsin and Anesthesiology residency/fellowships at University of Florida, these same satisfactions continued. Albeit in different ways, the OR and surgical ICUs provided for many successes and challenging situations. Cardiovascular, neurosurgical, and trauma patients were my staple for several years, engendering honesty tinged with compassion for the critically ill. My prior microbiology experience proved helpful for reducing hospital acquired infections, through work with infection control and environmental cleaning services. During fellowship, I assisted with trans-catheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), MitraClip mitral valve repair, and hybrid ablation procedures for atrial fibrillation. These advanced care teams taught me a broad approach to patient care.
And I continue to be amazed at the clarity of transesophageal echocardiography and utility of transthoracic views for guiding ICU and perioperative resuscitative measures. Now with board certification in Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine, and Advanced Echocardiography, the next goal for my family is to enjoy Southwest Florida’s gulf coast, living near my wife’s parents. We continue to hold true to our faith, pray always, and work to meet everyday’s challenges. Recently, my son and I hiked to Angel’s Landing at Zion’s National Park, enjoying an amazing view and looking forward to more adventures to come.
